Freedom-to-Operate (FTO) search is also known as Clearance Search or Right to use search. It helps determine whether marketing the innovation or applying a process infringes or overlaps a valid patent at a given point of time concerning a given market or geography. This study deals with the searching of active patents that overlap with the proposed patent invention or product. Conducting freedom to operate search minimizes the risk of patent litigation and enhances the competitive strength, helps meet investor expectations before funding, or identify potential acquisition targets which can strengthen the product portfolio.
